Being a parent is one of the most difficult jobs anyone could ever have. There are no instruction manuals to bring home from the hospital with you when you first have your baby to tell you what to do next. Since parenting is a learn as you go job, using resources around you is important and necessary. Here are some tips for raising a happy and well-rounded child.

Give them playtime. Since children learn through play it is important to give them the time they need to explore and learn. It is important for them to play with you and with other children.

Develop open communication right from the beginning. If your child feel like they can ask you questions and talk to you when they are young, they will most likely feel the same way when they are older. A child who feels like they can talk openly with their parents about almost anything is less likely to take risks and go out and do things without permission.

Let your child be their own person. Everyone has their own interests and their own personality, and your child will as well. Allow and encourage their developing personality and don’t try to mold them into who you think they should be.

Have a structured household, but allow for changes. It is important to set and enforce family rules, but you also need flexibility, and a realization that things may change as children grow and develop. Discuss house rules as a family and enforce the same rules for everyone.

There is only one tougher situation than dealing with a loved one which has a problem with drugs or some form of addiction and that is dealing with a loved one who won’t admit their addiction. The fact that you see the downward spiral and can do almost nothing stop it can make you feel helpless and feel there is nowhere to turn. The biggest problem about facing a loved one with addiction is getting them to admit that they have a problem and once you accomplish that task the rest of the ordeal can seem rather easy.

Denial is always an addict’s biggest weapon. Ideally you would want the addict to admit to himself or herself that seeking treatment is needed but at times the time necessary to do this is unattainable. At that point the task of convincing them that they need help is crucial and usually a professional is needed. There are many ways you can try to appeal to the addict but typically the most successful is to show them what they are missing in the form of family and relationships. Most addicts are good people and when they realize their addiction is hurting those that they love and themselves they seek treatment.

There are many treatment centers out there but many are cryptic as to what they offer in the form of help and support.
